Master Out of Control Emotions with a Mood Tracker

Mood tracking is a great way to get clarity on how you are really feeling and what is triggering negative feelings in your life.  Tracking your mood is a tool to help you master out-of-control emotions.  Particularly when you feel out of sorts or stressed and don’t know why. Emotions are of course essential to immerse yourself in life, to feel joy and sadness, to laugh and cry.  The problem is that we can become stuck in a negative emotional pattern. When this happens, you cannot see your way out.  Keeping a mood tracker helps you distinguish hormonal emotions and stress emotions and trauma emotions.

Are You Ruled by Your Emotions?

It is good to feel emotions, as they help us get more out of life. Imagine not feeling anything, nothing touches you, life becomes duty and function.  However, when you are ruled by out-of-control emotions, it’s like being in a choppy sea being battered from pillar to post. When you become aware of what triggers your feelings, you can begin to master your life in a positive way.

  • Do you feel as if you are constantly caught up in stressful situations?
  • Do you feel under constant pressure?
  • Do you feel frustrated, angry or sad most of the time?
  • Do the little things in life seem unsurmountable?
  • Do you feel stuck and don’t know how to lift yourself out of a mood?
  • Do you feel emotional for no reason?

In this case, you may benefit from tracking your emotional state.

How to Master your Emotions!

If you are unaware of what is triggering your emotions in your life, it is a good idea to track them.  There are many apps on the market nowadays, where you can track your emotional state day by day.

However, I prefer to use pen and paper.  If you feel this is more suitable you will use a more tactile sense. This way you can play around by using different coloured pencils or pens to tailor the colour to your emotions.

You may like to use a pad of graph paper for example, however, any kind of paper will do.  I feel making a chart yourself connects you deeper to your feelings, the experience is more visceral.

If you have the pad next to your bed or in the living area and a bag of coloured pens, you can really bring your awareness of your emotional patterns to life.

I have provided an example that was created on a spreadsheet (example given here), which you can also do.

It is helpful to make notes of any significant events that happen throughout the month.  Your monthly period for example, or a stressful time, anything that affects your mood.

What Next?

Once you can see a pattern, you can do something about it.  Sometimes, however, it’s not that easy, and that’s where I can help.

Emotions can be buried deep into the subconscious and certain events or activities will trigger an overreaction to a situation.

Even though you may have intellectualised your emotions and understand where they come from, it can be difficult to access these stuck emotions without external help.

I work with clients to release the pain these stuck emotions cause, to restore vitality. Using different techniques deep routed anxieties, stress and trauma can be gently transformed into confidence and feelings of empowerment.
